Dr. Tahl N. Humes owns and serves as medical director to Vitahl Medical Aesthetics in Denver, Colorado. She graduated with a BS from Indiana University, completed Medical School at Touro University in California, and Residency at Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver. She is a National Laser Trainer and National Spokesperson for Cutera® Lasers. HOW TIME DOES FLY!
I cannot believe that the holiday season is fast approaching! It feels like only a few weeks ago, it was June first. We were all looking forward to the heat of the summer sun, and we were planning our summer vacations. Now, the leaves are changing, and Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away. The next thing we know, we will be celebrating the New Year. As we look towards Thanksgiving, I find myself thinking about how much there is to be thankful for in 2010.
It has been a great year for VITAHL. As many of you know, we celebrated five years in business this past September, and we also welcomed Dr. Jason Martin, a renowned plastic surgeon, to the practice. With the addition of Dr. Martin to the VITAHL family, we now offer both office-based Vaser Lipo and Smart Lipo Body Contouring, which have been met with great enthusiasm. In his short time at VITAHL, Dr. Martin is already in high demand for office-based liposuction and Blepharoplaties (upper and lower eyelid surgery), as well as full face and body cosmetic surgery. We are so happy to have him on board, and I truly enjoy having another doctor in the office who broadens the treatments we offer at VITAHL. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and VITAHL wants to celebrate those who are survivors, those who have lost their battle with the disease, and those who are affected in one way or another by breast cancer. Happy Birthday VITAHL!
We are 5 years old today!! Happy Birthday VITAHL!! Can't believe that 5 years ago today we had our last inspection on VITAHL with the dreaded city inspectors, and we officially opened our doors for business on 09/01/05 with zero patients in our system, but many waiting for the day we opened. We slowly booked a few that month, and then grew and grew! 5 years later, we have gone from ZERO patients to a database of over 5000 patients, with about 3000 of these being active patients. We have increased gross revenue, even despite a down economy, and we continue to grow. A lot has changed in 5 years! I am looking forward to all our new stuff as our 6th year in business begins ..... Dr. Martin joining the VITAHL family, VASERshape and VASERlipo launches this month, White Lightening being released this month .... Lots of excitement for our great team!!

VITAHL - Not Your Average Doctors Office
I recently read an interesting article in W magazine titled, “Face Off” and it got me thinking about VITAHL and our mission. When I created VITAHL, I wanted it to be known first and foremost as a medical office owned and operated by a practicing physician who offered results- driven clinical aesthetic treatments. Today, that philosophy is more important than ever. Shortly after opening, the medical-aesthetics market exploded, fueled by business entrepreneurs opening non-physician-owned “medi-spas.” The majority of these facilities are owned and operated by entrepreneurs, not physicians, and they comply with the legal definition of medical spa by contracting with a physician who rarely, if ever, steps through the front door. These facilities often are known to produce mediocre and even negative results because they are operated as a retail-based revenue model instead of being a bona fide medical practice.
Just know that I am totally immersed in VITAHL. I feel that we are only as good as my involvement in the office. You deserve the opinion of a trained physician when it comes to your skin treatment options and regiment. Unlike most facilities, our office and staff is set up like a medical office, with licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and aestheticians, all of whom undergo extensive additional training administered by me. I am also committed to learning about all new procedures and products brought into our facility, and I require the same of my staff.
I want us to not only have the best technology, but to be the best at doing the treatments. For example, when we brought on Pearl Fractional, it was not enough to be trained by the company. I wanted to train with the doctors who did the research that brought the machine to market. Now, as we introduce VASERshape, our new non-surgical fat removal machine, we not only are the only office in Colorado with this technology, but we are the only office in the country who will be trained by the makers of the machine in Italy so we can learn from the best. I want the level of professionalism, competency and quality of VITAHL to outshine the bad experiences that some of you may have experienced at a “medi-spa.”
When it comes to products we offer here at VITAHL, rest assured that at VITAHL we won’t recommend products that you don’t need. I personally test the entire product inventory we offer to ensure that they produce the results they claim and only those that do end up on our shelves. In addition, I constantly research and test new products. When a new product surfaces that provides superior results I am not afraid to replace an existing product or line with one that produces better results. We are a result driven medical practice and so are all of our products.
One refreshing way we different from the cold and clinical offices described in the W article is our warm and enticing atmosphere. At VITAHL we have consciously created a warm, inviting and relaxing environment at our offices. I feel there is no need to produce or expose our patients to a cold and sterile environment in order for their treatment to feel safe and effective.

DOCARE International Medical Outreach
Last month I participated in the DOCARE International medical outreach trip to a small town in Guatemala, called San Andreas Ixtapa. It’s a great feeling to help people in need and with DOCARE, physicians and medical professionals come together for a week to provide much needed medical attention to some of the world’s poorest people in remote locations.
We set up our clinic in San Andreas and local villagers walked for hours to visit with our doctors about their ailments. We provided free medical services and free medications. The people from these remote areas do not have the access to medical care that we are accustomed to having, and many of the 500 patients a day we saw have never seen a doctor. Most came to see us for the same everyday issues we all go to the doctor for, but others needed more extensive care and we were able to set up and pay for extended care for those in need at hospitals in Antigua and Guatemala City. For some of the patients who were too ill to walk to our clinic, we made home visits. It was eye opening to see how people of these small villages live, many with no running water and no electricity.
It was hard, but rewarding work reaching out to help others. Of course, it wasn’t all work and no play. I was able to take some time off to hike through the country of Guatemala, and experience seeing an active volcano!
Sometimes we all need to be reminded that true beauty isn’t just about our appearance but also about what’s inside. While it’s our goal to help you be beautiful on the outside, we encourage the cultivation of your inner beauty too!
